The ALDEN BIESEN Castle
How to get there ?
Alden Biesen Castle is located in Belgium, next to the town of Bilzen, on the E313 between Liège and Hasselt. Take exit 31 for Bilzen Zuid, then the N700 for 5 km.
By public transport, you must first go to Bilzen station (around 1h45min from Brussels, 45 to 50min from Liège or 13min from Hasselt), then take a bus or taxi for the remaining 5 km to Alden Biesen
The enormous castle-abbey near the town of Bilzen is known as the Landcommanderij Alden Biesen (land command of Alden Biesen). It is said to be the largest castle between the Loire and the Rhine.
Historical
In the 11th century, Count Looz granted land between Bilzen and Rijkhoven to knights of the Teutonic Order. This order cared for wounded crusaders, and later also treated the sick. The current brick buildings date from the mid-16th century to the late 18th century. In addition to the castle itself, there is a church, a gallery, an orangery and several other ancillary buildings, as well as extensive and beautifully landscaped formal gardens. The castle is now a cultural center of the Flemish Community.
A 3D map and a 360-degree virtual tour of no less than 16 areas in and around the castle are available on the official website.
