Stefan SCHAEFER

         Stefan Schäfer is a solo double bass player at the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra. His double bass studies at the Hamburg University of Music with Hans-Dieter Eschmann were complemented by master classes with Klaus Stoll and Ovidiu Badila.

He won first prize in the competition of the Elise Meyer Foundation in Hamburg.

In addition to his orchestral work, Schäfer is also a passionate chamber musician. Together with friends, he founded the octet "Ensemble Acht". As a soloist and chamber musician, Schäfer has made numerous CD recordings.

Schäfer's repertoire is synonymous with versatility - he is at home in many genres and eras.

Schäfer's love of theatre is evident in his solo programmes. He has found a special form in literary concerts in which he recites poems while playing his own compositions. With humour, he gives insights into everyday relational life with his double bass.

       Stefan Schäfer is professor of double bass at the Hamburg Conservatory.

In 2012 he founded the "Contrebass Action Day" at the Hamburg Conservatory, a workshop for double bass players of all ages and levels. On Schäfer's initiative, HanseBass was founded in 2016, a supra-regional forum for double bass teachers in northern Germany that organizes training meetings for double bass teachers and workshops for young double bass talents.

Stefan Schäfer is repeatedly invited to international master classes for double bass and chamber music, such as at the "Bass Europe Academy".

 

          He is often invited to give lectures in courses given by the educational working groups of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bassini Brandenburg.  Schäfer has also been appointed several times as a juror at various international double bass competitions. He was chairman of the jury at the International Sperger Competition and the International Janáček Competition.

 

Stefan Schäfer is also a prolific composer for the double bass!
